Several theories exist, most recognized says the name comes from the letters “GP”, the military abbreviation for “General Purpose”. Some claim that it was named after “Eugene The Jeep” from the Popeye comics .

Audi – “Listen”
The name Audi is based on a Latin translation of the surname of the founder August Horch, itself the German word for “listen!”

BMW – Bavarian Engine Works
The acronym BMW stands for Bayerische Motoren Werke GmbH, which roughly translates to the Bavarian Engine Works Company.

Mercedes-Benz – Daughter Mercédès
The company was named after the daughter of Emil Jillinek, who designed the first racing car called a Mercedes. Benz is the family name Karl Benz, who founded the Benz motor company.

FIAT – Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino
Fiat is an acronym that stands for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino. It was chosen because it was a cars (automobili) factory (fabbrica) established in Turin (Torino) by Italian people (Italiana).

Hyundai – “Modern Times”
The name Hyundai means “modern times,” deriving from the Korean word “Hyun,” meaning “modern” or “present” and “Dai,” which refers to “era” or “generation.”

Subaru -“Unite”
“SUBARU” signifies a Japanese word meaning “unite,” as well as a term identifying a cluster of six stars, which the Greeks called the Pleiades – part of the Taurus constellation.

Kia – “To rise from Asia”
It stands for KI or “To Rise From” and A or Asia. In other words,
it stands for to rise from Asia.

Volkswagen – “The people’s car”
The word volkswagen means “People’s car” in German. The company was started in the 1930s.
