Hazard Lights – When and Why to Use Them

Lots of drivers are unsure of when and why to use their hazard lights. Is it legal or illegal to drive with your hazards on?

Why?
Hazard lights are used to alert other drivers of an approaching hazard, using them while driving can cause confusion.

When?
1. During an roadside emergency: If you’re in a crash or need to pull over to change your car’s tire or address another issue.

2. When getting pulled over by a police officer- hazards show them that you’re acknowledging their request and are attempting to pull over.

3. Driving in a funeral procession

Is it legal or illegal to drive with hazards on?
It is illegal in several states, but not in Pennsylvania. PA allows drivers to use hazard lights when driving in adverse weather conditions or if forced to reduce speed. Know the laws of the state you are driving in.
